    Scheppach 3000VS sharpener

hi all, I recently bought one of these units and am confused as to the function of the knob on the rear face (opposite to the on/off). Hoping somebody else might have it figured out? The manual is no help - it shows that one can turn the knob both ways - this I knew already! thanks Gavin

Vintage mystery lathe - any ideas?

hi all, I just bought this old lathe, mainly for the bits that came with it but it has piqued my curiosity just to find out more about it. Bed length is about 18", centre height 3" and the spindle is 5/8" x 10 tpi. The only markings on it are on the tool holder: Kingston Hastings and Type B...

    Stripping paint from thin plywood

hi all I have a 60's balance for restoration. It has a plywood cabinet with curved sides and cutouts etc, which is painted. The paint is badly crazed on the edges and curved parts, but mostly well adhering to the flat bits. I have scraped off what comes off in flakes, but the rest is well...

    mystery tools

hi all, I just bought a few things in a job lot at auction...any ideas please what these two might be for? There are no maker's marks etc. The short thing is clearly designed to go into a brace, but has no cutting flutes, it's just a sharp point. The knurled nut holds a kind of U-shaped...

Tung oil, skinning in the can

Hi all, I use tung oil quite a bit so understand it's a drying oil. When the tin gets half empty there's enough air in it to skin it over, even with the top screwed on. Is there a prevention tip, or do I just need to use it faster?!

    mystery object...

hi all This came in a box of random stuff. From the keyed bore, it's intended to go onto a shaft. Diameter is about 3" and the bore 3/4". What is it? Somebody out there has the answer...

    Coventry dies

hi all I just acquired a job lot of die chasers and want to sell them on as sets. I have researched types etc but have one question currently unanswered. The examples here (I have many others) show two sets which are both 1/8" gas thread, type S. Both from the same maker (Alfred Herbert) and...

    Cupped board

Hi all I have a small board of old mahogany which I'm making into a table. Size is about 26x16" and an inch thick. It's cupped by about 1/8" and with about 1/4" of wind between the ends. Grain is in the long direction. I've twice had it wetted on the concave side and with a damp cloth, clamped...

    wooden plane

hi all I recently acquired this plane in a job lot. It's had a hard life. This photo is after I squared up the sole and side and cleaned the metal parts up a bit: the wedge is split, so I've glued it up the depth stop screw fixings have rotted and it's been re-fixed at a jaunty angle to...

    Electrical question

hi all one for the electrical engineers please... The transformer in my pond filter/UV unit has burned out and spares are not available from Hozelock - who will instead happily sell me an entire replacement unit at 75 quid or so. Nor will they tell me what the transformer spec is so I can...

    Ful-Use vice?

hi all I came across a little 6" vice for sale, stamped 'Ful-Use', British made. I'm just curious about the semi-circular cutouts on the jaw tops. What are those for, do we know? I can't find anything online other than many more example photos. thanks for your wisdom

    Greasing motor bearings

hi all, I'm aware there are two basic types of grease nipple, the old sort which just relies on pressure contact and the new sort which have some sort of snap-fit to the grease gun. My 60s vintage Gryphon motor on the Coronet lathe should I guess have the old sort, but before I get the wrong...

    Record wood vice linings

hi all, I have a Record 52 and a 52 1/2 vice, both vintage, recently acquired for the bench I am currently building. My query concerns the fitting of the jaw linings/cheeks. Both have 5/16 Whitworth threaded holes, which implies that the linings are supposed to be fixed by machine screws or...

    Furniture board

hi all Does anybody have experience of furniture board like this? The price seems reasonable and I need thick, wide boards for a bench project. Any comments on quality would be most helpful. thanks

Recommendations for a reasonably priced machine/drill press vice?

hi all, I'm looking for a drill press vice for general wood and metalwork, and the variety is bewildering...any ideas please? Budget up to 50 quid. criteria: up to 150mm opening, ideally no need for rotation as my drill table does that slotted base v slots both vertical and horizontal any...

    Another Coronet Major thread

hi everyone, my first post! I've just bought a Coronet Major, I think quite an early model and bought as several boxes of unassembled bits, although I did see the motor run so I know that's OK. The morticer was seized though, and very little else moved as it should. I've spent a happy...
