A small weekend project - clock

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement, everyone. A lot could be improved on this, I know. But, I'm still a beginner, and learning on mistakes... Thanks Denis

A small weekend project - clock

Hi, Well, finally something I'm not ashamed to show :) After several small boxes, this weekend I decided to make something as a small present. Purchased a cheap clock mechanism, and decided to make a clock. After checking out my offcuts pile, I decided to make it from a solid block of pine...

    New saw handle (saw refurb.)

Well, I've been thinking along the same lines. I might try to find a piece of straight olive log - a bit larger and thicker than what I have now - and see if I can use it for a plane. I must admit I've never seen a wooden plane made of olive wood, so I don't know if that's a good idea. I guess...

    New saw handle (saw refurb.)

As an aside, since we're speaking of wood, I have a couple of short log pieces of olive :) Well seasoned (since last October/November, so almost a year)... I'm keeping them for somethng REALLY special. My wife looked at me really strange when, besides our usual stash of olive oil, lavender...

    New saw handle (saw refurb.)

No sweat, sources for wood are always interesting. As for templates, I've found a PDF on the Web site of "Tools for working wood" - it's instructions for their 9" dovetail saw, and there's a nice drawing of another saw handle - not the one that I used in the end, but also a very nice one...

    New saw handle (saw refurb.)

Thanks everyone for the nice words. It's nowhere as nice as some of the work I've seen on this forum and elsewhere, but, like I said, it beats the plastic borg handles hands-down :) Dave, it's really not a big deal. A bandsaw will come handy, but I'd have gone for it even without a bandsaw. A...

    New saw handle (saw refurb.)

Hi, After more than a week (day job keeping me busy) I got back to making sawdust :) After seeing so many nice saws, and lacking a proper dovetail saw, I thought about "pimping up" an old and rusty "combination" saw (i.e. one handle, several saw blades - the usual borg junk). The blade...

    Old homemade Plane

Or the predominant colour scheme used in painting workshops? ;)

    Mini gloat :)

Thanks, Alf. Anyway, it's your fault entirely :) Seeing your page on combis, I just had to get me a Record 043 - even though I made a DIY "grooving plane" some time ago. As for the "fancy box", well, I had to have a place for all the extras which tend to get lost (blades, rods, etc.). Seeing...

    Mini gloat :)

Evergreen, you'll find everything you want to know about small grooving planes here: http://www.cornishworkshop.co.uk/groovingplane.html#043 Naturally, that's Alf's site :) That's what got me interested in those little jewels... Like you said, it's compact, and does the job perfectly. And the...

    Mini gloat :)

Well, after making my own "grooving plane" some time ago, finally there are some other news. I wonder what is that ugly box used for? Well, let's take a peek inside.... Wow', it's a Record 043! Yes, it arrived safely.... A bit neglected, with rusted...

    Renovating a Drawknife

Sure :) I've been thinking abut these things lately, since taking up woodworking a couple of months ago... And since you asked, here is how I feel about this: I guess that from a certain point of view, it could be said that amateur woodworking is just another manifestation of "mid-life...

    Miter Plane

That's a very nice plane! So, your recipe for a shooting board plane is a heavy plane, thick blade and a lower than usual blade angle? I've been considering my next move in planemaking, and a shooting board plane is on top of the list. I have some thick blades with 30 degree bevels, but I...

DIY plane for making simple grooves - advice needed

Ace, thanks for the link - very interesting! Anyway, today I decided I'd better do something about it - if I don't make something now, chances are I won't make one any time soon. So, in the course of a hot Sunday aftrernoon, I made my first DIY plane. It's not exactly finished yet, but I...

The James Krenov Smoother – under review

A thoughtful review, Derek - like you said, it's good to put things into perspective every now and then.... I remember some responses to Philly's review of his new Krenov plane - some folks seemed to have confused form and function :) Regards, Denis

DIY plane for making simple grooves - advice needed

Thank you for the photos, Giuliano! I'm still considering the design - with the metal skate or without... I'll post a pic when (or IF) I make it. Namely, today I scored a Record 043 :) Doesn't look too bad, I think with a little care it could be brought back into usable condition...

DIY plane for making simple grooves - advice needed

Jesse, thanks for the book suggestion - but I'm trying to restrain myself to the essentials. If I continue this way, I'll soon be making my own blacksmith forge in the back yard, soon to follow by mining my own iron ore  Giuliano, thanks for the photos - that's an interesting plane...

DIY plane for making simple grooves - advice needed

Thanks for the suggestions, folks.... I had a look here: https://www.fine-tools.com/G301053.htm and saw the set of irons for that plane. Now I get the picture :) Then Mike posted his photos, and now it's all clear. However, I guess I'll make mine single-iron for starters - it should be a...

DIY plane for making simple grooves - advice needed

Philly, Scrit, thank you both for the ideas... The drawer bottom plane looks like the thing I need. How do you fit different width irons in there? It would be very useful to be able to fit several irons to the same plane... I mean, if the groove/hollow (or whatever it's called) in the plane...
