    Timber ID please

Hi, Can anyone help me identify what timber this is please. Its been used extensively as a display wood (i.e. it isn't painted over, just varnished with a slightly warming colour) in banisters and open tread stairs in a 60s house. Is it larch or douglas fir maybe? Thanks, Pat.

    routing 101

I have a feeling I'm asking a question that has a very obvious answer, but I can't see it :( If I need to rout a straight line, I can use batons to ensure the router's lateral position, but positioning the batons always ends up being trial and error. I really need a way of initially positioning...

I was about to start making these from pine, then I suddenly thought about resin leakage over time. So... Any better suggestions for something cheap that wont cause problems down the line. Tulip? Thanks, Pat

    limits of mdf?

I have a 300mm deep x 1000mm x 600mm wall hanging tool cupboard that is just 18mm ply with the back glue/screwed to the sides which are comb jointed together with the lot french cleated to the wall, all seems fine and has held together fine for the last few years. I've been meaning to make a...

    blum help please

Hi, Every time I look at the blum catalogue, I seem to get more confused, so could someone who knows what they're doing help me please. I'm planning on a row of 24mm thick rail & stile wardrobe doors which need to open to around 180 degrees. As such, they'll need to come out by at least 24mm...

    mirrored door advice please

Hi, I'm about to embark on a set of fitted wardrobes, the doors of which will each be around 1.8m x 50cm in 19mm veneered mdf with a faux shaker face frame in hardwood (thanks to whoever suggested the idea way back on here somewhere) and attached via 3 kitchen cupboard type hinges. I'm now...

    charnwood w650 size

So, after going backwards and forwards on whether to replace my hideously noisy and somewhat inaccurate Bosch GTS10 and if so, what would fit in my fairly small shop, I think I've finally come down on either a kity 419 (or axy ts200) or a Charnwood W650. Charnwood quote the size as being 1440mm...

    P/T advice please

Hi, I'm finally taking the plunge and buying a P/T. The trouble is that size is my primary consideration rather than cost, I have a small shop and need something that wont take up too much space once it's wheeled out of the way (as ever with a small shop, everything has to be be on wheels)...

    castors

If anyone needs castors, I can heartily recommend www.castors-online.co.uk. The 4" locking castors' I received this morning look a lot sturdier than the ones I've bought from rutlands previously, they were a lot cheaper, and I only ordered them on sunday evening too.

    Blade guards

Does anyone know of an after market, decent table saw blade guard? I've finally got sick of the blade guard on my bosch gts10 once too often as it spends most of its time so full of sawdust that you can't see where the blade is and the anti-kickback features seem to mar wood more than prevent...

I swear they see me coming...

Harrumph. After needing more besseys a couple of weeks ago, and since there were no real offers out there I ended up going for 8 x 1250mm of rutlands oneswhich arrived earlier this week. Today, I get an email from dm with a sale on bessey's and rutlands have responded with discounts on theirs...

http://www.eurus.dti.ne.jp/~k-yazawa/finger.html He has quite a lot of interesting joints at http://www.eurus.dti.ne.jp/~k-yazawa/jointwork.html too, some I know I'm going to be scratching my head over for a while. Pat.

    bench grinder question

Hi, I bought a cheap and cheerful ryobi 6" bench grinder a while ago. But I'm inlcined to get a cooler running wheel for it. The only problem is that the standard wheels on the grinder are 3/4" wide whereas the norton 3x ones are 1" wide. Does anyone know whether the wheel width matters too...

    cutting bamboo flooring

Hi, Does anybody have any experience of cutting something as fibrous as bamboo flooring with a mitre saw. I'm kind of thinking that a standard crosscut blade is likely to tear a lot and wondering whether to get a blade with a higer toothcount. Any ideas? Thanks, Pat.

    bathroom shelving advice please

OK, So I have my instructions from SWMBO. I need to build some 2" tall pocket shelves in an alcove in the guest bathroom. The construction seems straightforward enough, a lattice of softwood sandwiched between veneered MDF. Two things concern me though which I hope the combined experience here...

    Yet another grinder question

Hi, after much hunting here, I'm still really none the wiser on grinder wheel sizes, other than, other things being equal, bigger is better. I've finally decided to succumb to the (need?) for a wetstone grinder to simplify sharpening (although I actually quite like doing it by hand when I'm...

    sparks?

So, I just bought myself a hitachi circular saw and after firing it up, there aren't half a lot of sparks where the brushes touch the motor. Should I be surprised? Am I concerned about nothing? or is something a bit wrong? Thanks, Pat.

    Stunning customer service

It makes a pleasant change... One of the springs fell off one of my axminster bench dogs over the weekend. I emailed them about it this morning, anticipating having to post them back etc. 15 minutes later, I got an email from them to say the replacement was in the post and don't worry about...

    wrong slope

So, there I am in Buck and Ryan at lunchtime with the intention of looking at/buying a veritas low angle jointer. I'm all poised at the top of the slope only to find that they don't carry them. But somehow, I got convinced to enter the world of routers with a baby Trend T3, so now I guess I'm...
