    Tape measure

I prefer the Stanley Lever Lock ones - the tape is as sturdy as the Fat Max models, but when you pull the tape out it stays out until you squeeze the lever to retract it. Far easier than having to keep engaging and disengaging the lock as you pull the tape out in stages, and avouds that...

    Trend router

That is the combination I use and it's fine. I would like a bigger and more solid router table, but the PRT has removable legs and can be easily carted to use on site, or packed under a bench, hung on a wall etc if one needs to save space. You can also use it without the extension legs on top of...

    Bandsaw @ Aldi from Sunday

I'm 6'6" tall and used to suffer agonies of back pain after digging, so I got a long handled spade and it's great. I thought B and Q sold them, but I got mine from a local garden centre. If you ask them they'll usually get one in for you.

Or it could be fitted with a knife blade and used to cut up the Sunday roast.

    FESTOOL FANATICS

I had one who wanted a system that automatically printed out orders that needed to be brought from the warehouse. I asked him where the warehouse terminal would be sited. 'On the other side of that wall' he said, pointing to the wall behind the counter. 'Why don't you just stick your head...

    FESTOOL FANATICS

This is often a danger in getting carried away with what technology can supposedly provide. I used to design web sites, and both customers and designers are often very keen to employ the latest technology, which due to overconfidence (people often think that because web sites are powered by...

    wrought iron

On the topic of the Tay Bridge collapse, the disaster provided the subject matter for the most famous poem of the immortally dreadful poet William McGonagall, the only published work, so far as I know, to extol the virtues of buttresses in rhyme, albeit excruciating. The Tay Bridge Disaster...

    Where is everybody

I wouldn't know - the nearest I got to drinking was a sustaining mug of cocoa. But then, it means I can hie me to the workshop and get started without having to wince in pain every time I switch on the thicknesser. 8)

Small fine dust extractor - advice

It might be worth investing in one of the Makita vacuums. Plugs straight in to the mitre saw's dust tube, and the suction starts when you switch on the saw, if you route the power through the vacuum. Then comes in handy for cleaning up the workshop afterwards.

    Respirators

I use the 'acoustic' Trend one rather than the motor-powered air filter one. I was considering the more expensive model but frankly I was deeply unimpressed with the construction quality. The Darth Vader model I chose in the end is very effective and comfortable to wear.

    Has any one any idea's

Sometimes it's just a loose or damaged plug - try taking out the plug or plugs between computer and monitor and checking whether any of the pins are bent over. They are easy to straighten out again with pointed pliers, but do it gently or the pin can snap off.

    Hardwood merchant in Devon

Thanks for that - Saltash isn't far away, and Ottery St. Mary is just up the road. I think I'll have a look at them first, and then A&C. I'd better not say who I am in dispute with, as I am about to issue proceedings (it can be frightfully handy to be married to a barrister), and as my recent...

    Hardwood merchant in Devon

I recently fell out rather badly with my timber merchant - after rejecting the same shaky, warped, undersawn rubbish twice, I found it supplied anyway. Therefore, I'm looking for someone new, ideally in the Devon area - does anyone have any recommendations? I know there are several national...

    Lasers on power tools

Easier, unless it's for very rough work, or you can trust the laser absolutely. I never have, and my suspicions have usually been confirmed. I'm saving enough time by using the mitre saw instead of a hand saw - I don't begrudge the few seconds taken to square a line across the timber and line up...

    health and safety

Sometimes, an over-reliance on safety devices can, perhaps, make us less safe: "All the guards are in place so I can't have an accident with this machi... Oh dear." Plus It occasionally becomes almost impossible to see the workpiece on occasion. For example, the mitre saw: it's a circular saw...

    T/saw or B/saw?

Unless you have the budget and space for a serious bandsaw, that is, able to take a blade of 25mm-35mm (think about £1500 as a starting price), I'd say table saw first, and a little bandsaw like the Scheppach Basato 1 for tenons and veneers. I've just been given a Makita table saw, and it is...

Have you tried your nearest Lucas depot - they are great resurrectionists of old motors, or at any rate used to be.

    Bandsaw Blade Lubrication.

Those were the blocks I used to have on the big Stenner. We used red diesel as a lubricant - not recommended unless you are running large amounts, as a buildup would stain.
