Hi there, quick question. Where should the water bar in a door cill go in relation to the rebate and seal on the jambs? Hard up against the rebate? Or should it be stepped back a little behind the seals? Thanks.

    Door frame for Check reveal

I need to make a door frame to go in a traditional check reveal and am wondering about what the standard dimensions would be. I have allowed 50mm for the width of frame that is visible, I'm wondering how much more is generally added for the rebate. Im thinking another 50mm, is that about right...

Box sash windows in cavity walls

Hi there I'm trying to figure out you fit box sash windows into new cavity walls—in particularly walls built under the new regs which have a 150mm cavity. Excuse my ignorance about this. Also please excuse by builders ignorance—he doesn't want to fit sash windows anyway (waste of money mate!)...

Remove long throw gate lock? (Perry)

Anyone know how to get these off a door once they are attached? Removing the screws is not enough. It has the black handle/escutcheon thing on the front, and that won't come off either....

    Mobile Sash Window....

Hello! I've got a sash window which is going walk about ... or at least one corner of it is. The frame has somehow shifted back wards at least an inch in that corner, leaving a big gap between it and the brickwork and dislodging the plaster on the inside. Can't seen any sign of movement in the...

I need to cut out and replace the front part of a sash window cill. What's the best method to cut it our? Should I aim just to cut it across square and screw/glue a replacement piece on, or is more cunningness required? Thanks.

    Something Fishy

I've been working on this on and off for a year. It's a writing bureau in oak and sycamore with elm and boxwood marquetry. It's in an antique style, which is unusual for me. I fancied doing something different. Everything is done the old way apart from the initial timber prep. All veneer...

    Bathroom Unit

Finished fitting this yesterday. Nothing special but I'm quite pleased with it. The basin had already been fitted, and I wasn't allowed to remove it (long story), so I had to build the unit round the basin. Not the best way to approach things, but it turned out OK in the end....

    Scribing compass

This is a bit boring, but does anyone know where I can get hold of a decent compass for scribing — i.e. one that has a long point and stays set? The only ones I can find have silly little points to stop school children murdering each other (which of course happened all the time hence the...
