Your cheapest honing setup? **buying new only**

Thanks for the review, will give them a go - that's certainly a great price!

    Sources for buying oil stones?

Although I have an ancient and cracked fairly hard oilstone of some kind which does fine for most of my sharpening I'd be interested to know what you were going to recommend, to buy as a present for someone else (and one for myself if it turns out to be good!)

    "Foreign" Tools

Or Japan... or Germany... (going by tools that I own.) I have never been certain as to whether the word Foreign was just used instead of the names countries which would be distasteful to a British buyer or whether it was required by law.

    Mortice vise and method

I am definitely not in a position to give advice here, not having a huge number of M&Ts to my name, but when I made the outside door for my new office recently the stiles were considerably too long to fit on the bench I normally use. I made a couple of very basic but sturdy trestles / saw...

Most useful hand tools that are no longer made

Totally agree on both points... I was told on here that the Leytool drill was not a good choice as my only hand drill but that was rubbish - it's just great to use and my cordless drill almost never comes out of its case now. Any bigger jobs go to a brace obviously but the smoothness and ease...

    Record 44 vs Record 50

I've never used a 50 but if you're looking for a 44 don't make the mistake I did of getting a Marples version assuming they're the same. It doesn't have screw adjustment on the cutter - the first metal plane I've used where tapping with a hammer is the best way to get the depth of cut right...

    Tyzack and S & J catalogues

Mmm, must get one of those 13" compass hacksaw blades for asbestos! Thanks for posting, may help me date the Tyzack saw I got last year and haven't done anything with yet...

    Cheap Japanese saw

Hmm, pity I didn't pay more attention then, I didn't see anything except the larger two sided (Ryoba?) saw which I bought but would have been interested in the other type too. I've been interested in trying a Japanese style saw for ages and having used this one a wee bit I'm quite favourably...

    Finally admitting defeat....

I have a Spear and Jackson hardpoint tenon saw and have to say it's not great. The set seems huge and it's very aggressive; difficult to start in a cut and doesn't leave a nice finish at all.

    Leytool info

Simple and robust is good as far as I'm concerned! The compact size certainly appealed as did the fully enclosed design and rigid handle. I'm still traumatised by the Toolstation-sourced hand drill my son was given a year or two back... I genuinely didn't think it would be possible to mess up...

    Leytool info

Ooh - I'd forgotten about the endless hacksaw, having seen it in catalogues, and been intrigued. Do report back, in the metalwork section if need be. I will do once I've had call to use it... I hadn't ventured across the metalwork section yet despite doing at least as much metalwork as I do...

    Leytool info

Brilliant, thanks - I'd seen the Grace's Guide links before but not the patent drawing which tells me exactly what I was interested in knowing.

    Leytool info

While I wait for a long-fancied Leytool hand drill and intriguing "endless hacksaw" to come from their respective EBay sellers, does anyone have a copy of the original instruction leaflets for either of these, or even any pictures of the guts? I have been looking for a hand drill for a while...

Thanks for Sparing the Planes, Fellas!

I've never been to the actual shop but I've certainly bought (online) from him in the past year... might not always be the cheapest around but I've never had a dud yet which sometimes is more important to me than saving a quid or so by risking a random eBay purchase.

Thanks for Sparing the Planes, Fellas!

Was it Andy Stephens (Inchmartine Tool Bazaar) by any chance? When I was looking for a few H&Rs a while back an American had cleaned out his stocks! Up here we don't have the kind of car boot sales full of planes and other tools going for a song that those in the South of England seem to...

    Anyone Made a Beading Plane?

Ah, those look well worth the money especially as they're a well cared for set. Perfect Christmas present! (I wish I could find my very nice 1/4" bead moulder which has mysteriously vanished now that I want to use it - only myself to blame as I don't know anyone else who would have the...

    Anyone Made a Beading Plane?

Ouch! But then again, if they're really good ones and in good condition, is £45 really too much for a tool like that? I have a few beading planes collected over the past year or two for various projects about the house, average price was about £16 or so. No two from the same maker or even...

    Paul Sellers latest?

I believe I recall him saying that the techniques and toolmaking videos on his website would always be free of charge (though you may have to register / create an account on the website to view them.)

    Paul Sellers - Trademark?

Personality preferences aside, Paul Sellers is vastly better at actually demonstrating and communicating what he's doing to someone who doesn't already know and understand it. Roy Underhill may be more entertaining to watch but in the few videos of his I've watched he tends to gloss over some...

Dear Sir, I wish to register a complaint about this plane!

Brilliant! I love Victorian and Edwardian literature (particularly related to technology/craft/bicycles)... like a lot of their woodwork their general standards of craftsmanship in writing, illustration and printing too often put our trashy, disposable modern efforts to shame.
