    My Square Edge Revolution

Many don't stop to think that the No. 51, beautiful as it is, is strictly a right-handed plane. This isn't too much of an issue for squaring ends of stock, but it is a major consideration for mitering. if your stock cannot be flipped over (think of a molded picture frame), how do you cut the...

    Wood Rivers ?

I certainly have no objection to you voicing your opinion, and perhaps he would serve as the endorser and spokesperson for Woodcraft at shows and Woodcraft stores for no compensation. I am confident that he would not serve in that capacity, paid or unpaid, if his comments regarding their...

    Wood Rivers ?

Rob Cosman speaks highly of the WoodRiver planes because he is paid by their distributor, Woodcraft, to do so. There is no harm in that as long as you realize that he has a vested interest in such pronouncements and ten little mouths to feed at home. Interestingly, I see much more on this...

Millers Falls cigar shave. Any users please?

As I posted above, you can put the cutter from a MF #1 shave into an Eclipse jig, but you need to make a simple fixture to do it. This is my original design: I used a scrap of oak 1/2" thick and 3"x4", with the 3" wide end grain rounded over so that it is similar to the metal section of the...

    Dakota No5 Rusting issue. Strange!

It wasn't clear to me if you had your plane in the sock during the period in which it rusted. I have experienced several episodes of rusting planes while they were encased in those socks. They are a sort of wick, afterall. That eroded area on the sole of your plane that you show in your photo...

Millers Falls cigar shave. Any users please?

Despite what Mr. Smith says in his sharpening instructions, there is a way to use your Eclipse guide to sharpen the MF cigar shave cutter. I will have to get some photos together and post them here, but I can say that what I read in the post made my Alf is similar to my experience with the...

    Toothed blades for bevel-down planes

Please forgive me not reading this thread in it entirety, but I wanterd to add that Lie-Nielsen does make toothed irons for many of their bevel-down planes. Mr. Chapman seemed to mention that they had them only for the block plane category.

    Rob cosman beautiful shavings

Very impressive job by Rob Cosman. Problem is, I have bever seen anyone else perform these theatrics with his setup. I have seen more astonishing tricks with hyper-expensive infill planes ( no hands on the plane at all...just the plane being pulled along by a string). If it sells a few blades...

    Veritas small scraper palne

Interesting thing about forms is that there is always a great deal of giddiness when new products are announced; and believe me, manufacturers love this kind of publicity. The LV fancy block planes and their small scraper are good examples of this phenomenon. These new introductions both...

    Honing Guide and Squareness

With the MkII jig it is not so much a matter of getting the blade square initially as it is keeping it square during the honing process. This is true primarily with any blade or chisel that falls into the narrow category. The clamping pressure on the jig is so far outboard that there is...

WTB - Eclipse 36 honing guide

Well it appears that David's input back in '01 has got legs and maybe something is in the offing from L-N.

WTB - Eclipse 36 honing guide

eBay UK....now that's what I'm talking about! Thanks, Mark. I will tell my friend to get bidding. He can ask them if they will ship to the U.S.

WTB - Eclipse 36 honing guide

Bugbear, why must the sharpened surface be "self registered" with the sharpening medium? Isn't the purpose of the jig to provide the registration so that undesired pitch. roll and yaw do not occur? This is why jigs like the Veritas I & II and any top clamping jig are so limited. They can't...

WTB - Eclipse 36 honing guide

Thanks to all who have replied so far. To Bugbear, I understand your question about LN "gilding the lilly" and I believe it was fairly answered in the post about the Trend guide, one that I was not familiar with. The Lie-Nielsen guide, from what has leaked out, will have a positive holding...

WTB - Eclipse 36 honing guide

Quite honestly, I feel that the Eclipse (original) is still the best all around honing guide ever made. The clones are OK if you manage to get a decent copy. This friend of mine just happens to want an original. He has the Veritas and some others, but just has a craving for this one. Thanks...

WTB - Eclipse 36 honing guide

I'm venturing (virtually) across the pond in search of an Eclipse #36 honing guide for a woodworking friend of mine. These are virtually non-existent here and I would like anyone's assistance in locating one in the UK. It would be much appreciated.

Disaster with a trend diamond stone

Interesting how diamond stones are falling out of favor with woodworkers. I have never had a very good experience with diamond stones, and have posted many times that I felt they were not a good investment for the hand tool sharpener. Now, most of the posts around the various forums report...

Sunday morning gloat or was I ripped off FINISHED

If you want to remove the pitting from the chip breaker you can use a method that has worked well for me: use a mill file to "draw file" the entire area where the pitting exists. Draw filing as it is called in the States is holding the file 90degrees to the filing stroke and pulling the file...

Rusted Up Foreplane (Not rusty anymore, pics here)

In reference to the side handle on the Record, I saw that same plane in an antique shop yesterday. It was in very good shape and was priced at $90.00, if anyone is interested. You are right, the side handle was more like a chisel handle in shape.
