    Painting over silicone polish

when we were in Spain my wife came across jumbo size aerosols of furniture polish at knock down price, so everything in the house has had a good coating, including paintwork. now for the problem, I want to repaint 2 doors, cleaned and sanded in the usual way, but paint wont adhere, as though the...

    Terminating an electric cooker

Crimp is probably best job, no loose strands, as long as you use decent lugs and a good crimper, not one of those that just puts a dent in it.

    size of heater for bathroom...?

Whilst there are several factors to take into consideration, (No of outside walls, insulation, size of windows) I would suggest that 1Kw is insufficient, the heat up time and recovery if somebody leaves door open, will be excessive. There are calculators online where you can input specifics of...

    16amp Question?

+ 1 for MM comments. There is I think a wide spread misunderstanding about motor current, and protection. Even dare I say amongst sparks. With regard to the pic of workshop electrics, I would recommend getting an electrician to look at it, as the 13a sockets appear to be protected by a 40a...

    Skew chisel

Well I spent a few hours on the grindstone today, absolute success, sorted skews out first then moved onto gouges, I had assumed wrongly that all the bevels were correct but just dull, and my lack of success on the lathe was down to me, sorted them and now I am getting somewhere, thanks for...

    Skew chisel

I have been given a number of skew chisels, they range in size from 1/2in to around 1.5in, now being a novice I am a little confused as all the angles are different ranging from 15deg to 45deg, the end skew angles are all different, my question is, is there an optimum angle across all sizes, or...

Options for phase conversion single to dual

I believe the motor is standard foot mounted job, therefore I would have thought the cheapest option with a small motor such as this, would be to replace it with a single phase one, and a new starter of course. still less than cost of decent inverter. martin

    Drill Bits

Digging about in the back of the shed, I found a box of drill bits that havnt seen the light of day for 25+ yrs, all sorts of sizes and shapes, but one type that made me wonder what material they were used to drill. They have what I would call a slow twist, largest is standard length about 12mm...

    Thermometer Accuracy

Spindle wrote: Hi Checking thermometers using any method, (boiling point of water - melting point of ice etc.) will only indicate their accuracy at that / those specific temperature(s) - not across the whole range. To fully check the calibration it would need to be compared to a standard...

    Thermometer Accuracy

There may be facility to calibrate, if there is get hold of a mercury or alchohol thermometer, best to do it mid range ie, room temp, the adjust to match, if you need accuracy you realy need something that is able to be calibrated, this is especialy true with humidity meters, the tool to use is...
