Joe, This particular piece came from a tree taken down in a friends back yard in the Blue Mountains a few years back. It looked pretty ordinary as a blank and I was quite surprised as I roughed it out, in the end the whole colour, grain and spirals etc worked out very well, it should sell well...

.. Truly! Its rocket science, I kid you not. Spirals, flutes whatever its not that important. As mentioned its soft timber and it carves well too that I would add its very stable and predictable with not allot of tear out and most of all being a noxious weed here its free.

This was a fairly ordinary piece of CL with not much heart wood. So a couple of coats of DO later it has darkened up nicely and makes a fairly respectable looking bowl. 250mm x 150mm with a opening of 100mm

Woody yes it can be messy but this time I used a Proforme Hollower and it tends to shoot the chips etc off to one side. Hobbler... Parks, hmm,do you know him personally? I intend to contact him and to get some burrs.

A bit of both actually, this part took the most time and was the most difficult.

Mallee hollow form, around 10x5 took awhile to finish the wet weather played merry H*** with the polyurethane I was using.

I like around 75mm glued in with epoxy, commercially many only provide 50mm. My argument against that is if it ever faults you've lost your handle and a good catch on hardwood will most likely rip it out. I probably have made more than 60% of the handles I use with this method and have never...

This particular wood I doubt if its made its way to the UK, another desert timber from the central highlands of Queensland. Turns very well and polishs up with a little buffing to a high degree of finish. 6" high 5" dia with 1.5" opening, no finish just buffed, will wax it and buff it later...

Wipe On Poly by MinWax an American product. As I understand its not available in the UK as yet, but there some moves a foot to buy out a local UK company by an American who makes the stuff.

A piece of fairly good curly Eucalypt, originally I was going to carve spirals on it. But thought better of it as the curl is effective enough on its own. 7x3" witha wall of around 1/8th" finished with WOP two coats and buffed with a neutral wax.
