So much for discouraging incandescent light bulbs

Around the time this thread started I made the decision to replace every single light in my house with LEDs. Partley because I am tight, Mostly because I hate CFL's with a passion. I despise any light that has a warm up time. I started out with the Muller lights (not to be confused with the...

    Help I broke my plane!

I have done exactly the same to my piece of rubbish stanley no.4 (plastic handles, hence rubbish). I managed to screw mine back in though, it is very hard to engage the thread but it is possible. I haven't managed to lock it in place yet though, it is tight enough to be usable but I have to be...

Tips - Where to start for the new woodworker

I can't do anything with mine, it is a 2 year old 600mm version. It wobbles when I saw, it twists when I plane. And when I chisel is skids on the floor. At best it is handy to clamp things to for additional support.

Tips - Where to start for the new woodworker

A few tips and tricks I learnt. Don't touch a black and decker workmate with a 10ft barge pole. Learn the difference between Rip cutting and cross cutting and choose your tool/technique accordingly. Learn how to sharpen your tools as early as possible and keep them sharp. Remember when sawing...

Amateur ambitious build. Ransoman builds a Studio. (Shed)

A few recent pictures. It is getting there and looking pretty damn classy. The windows are now all done. The windows were salvaged so the studwork had to be modified to accomodate them. The 3 small side by side windows on the side image had a 4x4 lintle installed above to cut the 2 studs out...

Advice Please - Curving a wooden fence.

Hi all, I am currently in the process of fencing in my front garden to keep my dog in and the neighbours dogs out. my garden is rectangular but has a long sweeping curve on one of the corners and the type of fence I am making is a vertical plank fence using 150mm wide by 18mm thick planks, set...

    So annoyed with myself :(

Thanks everyone, you have made me feel a lot better. I put the plane to use to make some wooden shims to fill some spaces around a window so was pleased to see that It was still usable and my first attempt at sharpening the blade was successfull.

Aquarium stand - rustic (aka cheap!)

I am planning on doing an aquarium stand as well but my tank is somewhat heavier (275 liters, nearly 350kg filled). I would definately recomend adding some mechanical fixings, not just the glue and dowels but some strong screws as well. To eliminate the sideways stresses, give it a solid back...

    So annoyed with myself :(

I make no secrets that I am very much new to woodworking and therefor have little to no experience. I have always believed that you should buy the best tools you can afford as they perform better, last longer and hold value. With that I snapped up the chance to get a much discounted Veritas...
