I cut the hole for the top guard into a slot to make it easy to put on/remove. Don't find it makes much difference TBH though, so I leave it off more often than not so I can see everything lining up properly. So long as your push stick/featherboard practices are sound you'll never come close...

I would think that the quickest, simplest finish to apply now which will require the least prep and attention would be an oil finish. You'll be able to give it at least three applications, possibly more depending on when it needs to be wrapped. I'd just apply oil straight off, wouldn't seal it...

Personally I'm not that convinced of the merits of auto-start. I have my Camvac plugged into a convenient socket wherever I'm working, so I use that to switch it on and off. With small tools like a ROS or hand held planer, I find they get switch on and off so much (especially the ROS) that...
