    Norris question

IT's possible but A7's were only made for a very short time. And I am pretty sure Konrad's version of the A7 has the mechanism I describe. The adjuster in the A7 has only a very short travel and there are multiple holes in the iron to allow for movement as the blade wears. I'm guessing that in...

    Norris question

Huh? On the Norris A7 the blade is drilled with a series of holes that connect to a pin on the adjuster. The adjuster is a miniature of the smoother adjuster. See here for pictures: This link takes you to the shoulder plane exhibit, click on the Norris section and scroll towards the bottom...

mortice chisel handle splitting.. router time?

the handle looks a little flat topped - and your mallet is catching the edge. Chances are the crack started ages ago. radius over the top of the handle and see what happens. Should fix problem.

How flat can you plane your work? With a flat plane?

A couple of things: I would agree that a plane should be either 1) flat or 2) touching at the obvious 3 points 3) slightly convex. if the #1 the plane works the most predictably on all timber. if #2 the plane will work fine but takes a little more skill - especially on very short timber in...

    Rasps

AS you say they are effective - but the tooth is initally is stubbier than the auriou. but the stainless is tougher. On tough woods they really shine. On real soft woods the cleaner cut of the Auriou is better. So it depends on what you are doing.

    Joseph Marples T14 Mortice Gauge

I reread my post and it sounded a little harsh. I apologize if I sound jumping down your throat. It's really depressing for me as I see the entire industrial infrastructure of England, Europe and the US demolished. I've been told by reliable sources that it's actually less expensive to make a...

    Joseph Marples T14 Mortice Gauge

what makes you think that? THere are a couple of steel dealers left in sheffield but I doubt very highly that there are any steel makers left there. I would even be surprised if ANY steel refining is still done in the UK although it's possible - there are still a few rolling mills left...

    Joseph Marples T14 Mortice Gauge

The marking gauge in question was made by Joseph Marples. STill a Sheffield based family firm since 1840 something. and still run by a Marples (Tony). Irwin Marples and other IRwin products have nothing to do with that and our currently made in China. The machinery that was used to make...

    What really causes GRINDER WOBBLE?

with a bench grinder there is enough play in the bushings and wheel bore to make any balancing attempt a waste of time. However after you mount the wheel dress the rim (never dress the sides of the wheel) and the wheel will run true and balanced. if you have a little side to side wobble it...

    Wenzloff & Gramercy

Ray, and others, It should be noted that the blades are Gramercy blades but these are kits that have been very nicely assembled by Harbo. I think they are very very nice examples of the kits but not the same handles as our production saws.
