Cheers - thanks. Problem solved! :D

I have lost/buried the charger for my airshield pro. I have several of chargers that are the same spec (voltage/power etc) but I can't find anywhere the polarity (ie is the centre pos/neg?). It is about 3 years old (and has held its charge so well I didn't miss the charger!). Martin

My dust extractor (Metabo SPA 1702 W 230) went bang. I have dismantled it fine and an impeller blade has broken as I guessed. I have removed the screw from the end of the shaft, but haven't managed to pull the impeller from the shaft yet - reluctant to use too much force in case there is a trick...

Hmmmm my "I put them in a pile at the end of my bench so that I can knock them on the floor later" doesn't seem so organised now!! I love the simple idea of the notched piece of wood with magnets. Thanks (and thanks ofr the question that prompted the sharing of this neat idea). Martin

I have a small Jet lathe and the motor heats up pretty quickly, but doesn't seem to get hotter as it runs for several minutes - I think they just run at quite a high temperature.

I got a deal on the basic axminster chuck when I bought my late from them. Well worth phoning and asking.

I use an insert and in all honesty simply forget it is there. Can't imagine what problems there could be really.

Satisfying isn't it!! Nice dish. I found it useful to practice lots of making shavings from cheap (free) offcuts as well (but must admit I couldn't resist knocking out a few bowls from nice bits too). Martin

The point is that any lathe will have limitations. Personally as a new turner I decided that I probably wanted to master techniques etc before I tried scary stuff with huge lumps of wood. If I want to move on to something bigger it will be big, heavy and have enough grunt to turn the wood...

I bought a Jet JML-1014 as my first lathe a few months ago and cannot fault it. It costs a bit more than your budget I think, but when I bought it there was a great deal on at Axminster.

Page one of the manual (which I found on line) gives the spec for the lathe - it includes the morse tapers for both headstock and tailstock as 2MT - but check the manual yourself just to make sure I found the right one for your lathe before you spend any money!! Martin

You could play a turner's version of chinese whispers - copy a pawn and pass your copy on. Be interesting to see how the first and 16th pawns differ after 16 different people had had a go! Martin
