As for the lack of power and bogging down I wonder if it could
be a broken brush. The symptoms are typical.

Hi Sig,
That was my very first thought, the machine actually came with a spare set and one of the plus points of the machine is how easy they are to get at. However, they were fine. I also took it out and had a good look at the windings, and they also 'looked' OK. I'm pretty sure the reason is a duffy magnet on one side.
As for Frankenstein - I couldn't have put it better meself!

Steve,

what about the brush cariers? if one of them is cracked
the brush wont sit right and will cause same problems as a
worn or broken brush.
