Film titles wanted. We are setting up a village film society and I'm hoping (amongst other things) to show non fiction films on themes, local history etc . What about woodwork ?

I've heard of 'Alan Peters the makers maker' dvd. Haven't seen it but it could be worth a look. Any other suggestions along those lines?

There's loads of stuff on YouTube about how to make things from wood. Plenty of old threads about them too.
But possibly all a bit too specialist to keep a general audience awake!

So maybe you want films where there is specialist content, but also enough of a story to keep people watching.
Personally, I enjoy the Woodright's Shop - a US TV series which has been running for over 30 years. Episodes are 26minutes long. About 8 years worth can be streamed from the PBS or UNCTV website, assuming you will be set up with an internet connection, PC/phone/tablet and a digital projector. Or you can buy all episodes on DVD, though early ones will be lower resolution.

Thanks for that. Yes I've got to investigate streaming!
I was wondering about specialist film shorts interspersed with speakers perhaps.
Some stuff would appeal to a wide audience if presented well - such as those amazing Swedish clog and chair making films.

There is an excellent series of docufilms now available on youtube for a TV series from Ireland called Hands, it was made at the end of the 70's and early 80's and documented a whole series of traditional skills and crafts that were disappearing quite fast. They are captivating enough for both general interest and afficienados. start here and the list goes on to the right hand side:
Hands- Cavan cabinet makers - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx2y7MAys20
Hands - Bookbinder - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBd67qQy96k

"Alone in the Wilderness" might be good crossover material. The story of one old man building a cabin up in Alaska, with a few tools and some hard work. Various versions on YT or commercial legit copies on www.dickproenneke.com .

If you have the stamina and are interested in how an acoustic guitar is really made, complete with the mistakes, look for Jason Beam on youtube. He has made, up to now, 39 almost real time videos of the various stages of construction and his guitar still isn't finished. Many are entertaining and some just make you want to scream at him.
