woodturning / lathe cabinet?

I posted this pic in general a couple of weeks ago but drawn a blank - as it were.. :)

it's been suggested it could be a lathe or woodturning cabinet from the brass holders on the back wall? Does this seem feasible to you? I'm not sure about this as I've not seen chisels stored horizontally.

Also the length available would not be sufficient for the longer handled varieties??


I'm not holding out too much hope of finding out what it might have been used for, but if I can discount something it was not used for, then thats a help too.

A lot of older lathe tools had shorter handles than we use today so it could have been or maybe bench chisels? Obviously knocked up at home, not a commercial one.

Thanks Pete, thats a good point... what's irritating me about this is that I'm unable to recognise the outlines of what tools went in there! :) At the moment, I've got my metrology gear in it.

I did wonder, from the variety of joints and techniques used to make the wooden tool holders, if it might have been an "apprentice piece"?
