Wood id help please - some sort of mahogany?

This wood is from a rather ugly piece of Victorian furniture I bought at a local auction with the intention of recycling. It yielded four nice flat pieces of hardwood (2'x 3' x 3/4") & some other bits. I think its some sort of mahogany, but I'd be grateful for a confirm. Planes easily, even grain, colour has a tinge of purple. Some pics

I am far from being an expert on wood id, but it certainly looks mahogany-ish to me. Perhaps sapele?

That is a very nice piece of central American mahogany. Are you sure it came from a victorian piece? It looks georgian to me.

It was described as Victorian in the auction catalogue - and to my eye it looked late Victorian : heavy and dark, and rather poorly proportioned. Certainly none of the refinement I'd expect from the earlier period. The price wasn't Georgian either - I got it for £40, no other bidders. It was damaged, which probably helped (me). I thought that a bargain, given the price of new hardwood: it also yielded four turned & fluted supports, which I think might make the legs of nice chunky low bench or table.

You may be right. I looked again at the veneered framing timbers & found a small makers' plaque : "Brew & Claris, Manufacturers, Finsbury Place, London" - they seem to be a fairly well known maker, which as a partnership were certainly working as early as 1860.
