Wood for quaich

Can anyone suggest what wood would be most suitable for a Quaich that would be used for drinking from at times.

Always oak for me, although a melamine finish or similar is required to prevent staining. I have only turned a few quaichs but all have been oaken vessels. That said, any food safe wood would do the job. Have a look at this site. They have a list of timbers and an idea of what each looks like when turned.
 
Oak is probably the traditional wood but the ones for the commonwealth games are made of elm. Any hard wood would probably do. I would use either a good few coats of melamine or Rustins plasticoat which is guaranteed alchohol proof not just liquid proof.
