A neighbour who is retiring from woodwork and sold her chisels recently gave me some lime wood carving blocks and files together with numerous abrasive papers. In the picture there is a sharpening stone with Japanese characters but the word diamond is showing. Does anyone recognise this stone and does it in fact have diamonds impregnated, and is it just a touch up stone (two grades) or a more serious object.

"Diamond" is a brand name of a Chinese tool maker. Cheap but OK in my experience (one spokeshave and a chisel). Probably your stone is the same, on the other hand it could be solid diamond all the way through!
