Think i have just beaten my record for most expensive timber quote. 10 metres of 2x2 sawn figured ash, about two thirds of a cubic foot.... wait for it...... £536.66! To put that into perspective 2" normal ash no more than £25 a cube trade.

Bah all this board / cubic feet stuff still makes no sense to me. :(
Cheers Mike

I assume there is a pricing error?????????????????????

I think it is a pricing error. Doing a quick calculation, it appears that they gave you a price for 2/3 of a cu. metre. If that is indeed what they did, it would come out to £25-26 per cu. ft.

nope no error, he checked it 3 times. I specified 10 metres of 2"x2" and thats the price i got. was fantastic timber but i dont think its worth paying that much! The company is renowned for high quality and high prices but i would never have thought that ash would be that much. Aparently you only get the true figured effect from the last 4" off the edge of a certain size board and wastage is high.

If a treaveller went knocking at an elderly persons door and asked that much for ash would they get d@'e for extortion?

And in my back garden I also have a large ash tree, which has previously been butchered by a "tree surgeon", has no conservation order, and we were intending to have it felled at some point.
So - can anyone tell me how I can get some money back on it??

I suppose if you had a tree surgeon fell it and then contacted one of the hardwood specialists they might do a deal with you.

Yes, but how did he check it? If he simply went through the same process 3 times the answer's almost bound to be the same every time. Since (by my maths) it works out at over £21,000 per cubic metre it just can't be right surely. Was he working from some kind of computerised base price possibly? If so it would seem likely this is wrong in the system - decimal point in the wrong place for example. I've had similar issues before with a local timber merchant, counter staff are so ingrained with the "if it's in the computer, it must be right" attitude that frequently common sense goes out the window.
I've looked at the West's prices here and even allowing for drying/preparing/sorting/wastage etc. I don't see how anybody could justify such a markup.

think we'd all give up at those prices rare timber like pink irory is cheaper than that!!!!

no computor, all done by book prices and calculator and by the man who owns the business. I supose the cost is in timber selection, resawing and the fact its only a small amount. £2-300 a cube is about the norm for selected or specialised niche timbers. Its all in the man hours to select it out.

I don't know, I think you're being way too forgiving. After all, we're not talking £2-300 a cube - more like £6-700. As for the man hours, I don't want to appear rude to the man but he's a timber merchant not a brain surgeon. Personally I'd vote with my feet, as I take it you have done, but not before letting him know (clearly and politely, of couse) why.

Paul, my understanding is that ash is classified as a weed, so cannot see any justification for a preservation order, serious.

Sugest you try

This is a cooperative in the forest of Dean. I met two of the chaps at the Roadford wood fair and was very impressed.

Your quote was ludicrous, and it would be interesting to know the name of the firm so that others can avoid it.
