I bought some recently from B&M and noticed it didn't carry a BS number. I thought this odd as I don't think I've seen it without the BS245, so I inquired- they told me it didn't have to have one. I've l ways understood the reason for using it over turps sub is that it is constant, so I asked Trading Standards - here's the reply-

According to the relevant regulations covering this type of product, Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures, white spirit does not have to be labelled with the BS number. However it does have to comply with the British Standard to be called white spirit in order to differentiate it from other turpentine substitutes.

For info, the label is required to contain:
The name, address and telephone number of the supplier
The nominal quantity
Product identifiers
And where applicable, hazard pictograms, signal words, hazard statements, precautionary statements and supplemental information.

So now you know. :D
