Daft situation. I want two 2" lengths of maple (or any white wood paler than oak) about 3mm thick, to inlay.
Any UK supplier of offcuts please?

Can you 'refinish' a piece to the size you want? Most hardwood flooring places will send you a sample, often for free.

So, 2 pieces 50mm x 25mm x 3mm?

I have some thick veneer that can't be far off that thickness, if I can find it. Failing that, I can take a slice off a piece of pse. The problem I have is that I am in Leeds and the city appears to be on lockdown due to flooding. I don't know what will happen about postal collections and sorting etc. You are welcome to some of this veneer or pse if it is any use to you.

The alternative, which may give you a better grain match is to fume or ebonise some oak. This will give you a dark rather than light contrast.

Priorities! Wait till the water subsides? (I thought Leeds was largely on a hill, only town centre down by the river?)

But yes, that would be ideal - I've "found" Paul Sellers, making his winding sticks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EToMNxJ4-vw and have found scrap ebony - just need the sighting pieces?
I'm using oak for the base - and want a light contrast to the ebony inset piece? Hence 'light'

regards Dave.

I'm on the south coast, south west Hampshire, if you're in the area you're welcome to some saw cut veneer (approx 2.5-3mm thick) off-cuts of Holly, Arctic Sycamore, or Maple. I can probably sort you out heavily rippled off-cuts of the Sycamore and Maple.

2" x 3mm? Surely you can just chip a bit off something in the house, or the garden?
Seriously though - a good source of odds and ends of interesting timber is old furniture or other wooden objects. Also pulling it apart is a brilliant intro into construction and design.
Keep your eyes open you never know what might be floating past!

Sorry Custard - E Anglia (Peterborough).
Kind offer - thanks.

Good idea - furniture auctions etc. Though 'white' (pale) woods would be less common in the UK.

Maple received this morning - The change from sawn to planed still makes me smile!

Aside:
Ebony obtained as 'reject' guitar 'neck'?

Job now finished. On oak, maple isn't as 'white' as I thought, but I'm happy the tool does that job.
Again, thanks to Droogs. Photo on flickr
