Does anybody know of anywhere online where I can buy blank 'log slices' so I can make my own sign? I'd like something quite big, say the size of an A4 sheet.

I've had a look on ebay but they seem rediculously priced for what they are, as well as the crazy postage!

(Oh and no, I don't fancy cutting up the log myself!)

Find your local supplier of firewood for wood burners. Pop down in person and hand over a tenner, you'll come away with everything you need for signs plus freshly felled crook fruitwood branches for spoon carving, etc, etc.

As always with sourcing any timber, get face to face with the supplier and his stock, if you're a small user buying wood online or by phone you'll often just end up disappointed.

Good luck!

Often seen as a basic bit of wood and therefore expected to be on the lower end of the price scale.

I suspect reality is a little different, to deliberately store and dry a log naturally and intact without any splits or shakes is not easy and involves considerable time and effort in the handling.
To find a random log suitable is going to be a rarity, the chances of the slices failing after cutting is going to be high regardless, and finding a log that will produce a batch without blemish not easy.

If the logs have to be kiln dried to improve the yield possibility then they are going to be as expensive to produce as any other seasoned timber.
