My now very old Lion brand grinder is running out of life and it will need replacing sooner or later. Always been happy with a horizontal whetstone and found the ability to flatten the backs of blades on it very handy. Looked around recently and all I could find is a a rather cheapy looking unit from Rutlands but to be fair it may work fine. So is that the only one on the market or are there some more pro type machines lurking somewhere?

Interesting, a quick Google shows unavailable from Amazon.co.uk and little listings elsewhere. Earlier in the year they were available in 240v from a few places, I was looking at one for myself, the £300+ price put me off.

Ouch!

I can see why but then again what does a good Tormek cost these days? Think I would grudgingly pay that to have another horizontal wetstone grinder.

There are often some of these on fleabay from about £200. The only disadvantage is they are the size of a washing machine. :D

Probably the best horizontal whetstone grinder about.

Now they are business but as you say the size of a washing machine and not exactly subtle in it's steel eating ability if I remember rightly. Not used one since school so my recollections of it might be wrong.

Good tip and found lots of images of the right machine but again sadly nothing in the UK.

Edit. Hadn't realised Dictum was this side of the pond so might be an option.

Re the WS200, have a look at stumpy nubs site. he has a few vids about it and some add ons that he's done. may suit you more and probably be a bit sturdier than the other one

Hmmm had a look at a video but all seem a bit gimmicky and DIY. Heat sink to avoid overheating? Might work but never an issue with water cooling. Also mentions taking the burr of at the same time  Sounds like trouble.

Maybe I should get out to some shows and look at some of these machines in operation as I freely admit to being completely out of touch with the new sharpening systems on the market.

I like the look of those flat waterstone grinders. Though it looks like Rutlands aren't currently stocking them as that link is for the planer blade jig, and not the machine. I'm not sure about that one from Dictum as it looks like you wouldn't be able to flatten chisels/plane irons on it as the stone sits below the lip (but maybe I have this wrong). If anyone can correct me on that, please do as I might consider one in the future.

I had a Worksharp 3000 and really liked it. I sold it and wished I hadn't! The only issue with them is that the consumables are stupidly expensive, but they work really well and are great for flattening. It doesn't overheat the steel easily unless you're really taking a lot of metal off and you can always dip in water. I'm considering getting another if and when funds allow. Though you really need the few extra jigs (platform and rail) for making a truly versatile system and that really takes the price up (unless you want to make the MDF platform that StumpNubs describes).
