This one is as good as any and 10% off until tomorrow lunchtime !

Can use it as is as it comes with a set of general purpose jaws, but could also add

or

at the same time if feeling flush, or later as you figure out what you do most on the lathe.

Or this one from Rutlands looks the same as my Vicmarc which is pretty good

Think you will find most new scroll chucks like these are around the same price £90 to £150, so a bit of an investment, but means you can do so much more on the lathe, more quickly and easily, so well worth investing in if you think you will stick with the turning.

Cheers, Paul. :D

I use the Vicmarc VM120 chuck and have no complaints after four years of (admittedly only light hobby) use.

A chuck that size could be a formidable load on a small lathe though, but if the quality of the VM120 is anything to go by, the VM100 should be a good chuck as well.

Phil Irons is the UK Vicmarc agent and is in my experience very helpful.

As Paul pointed out, there is the Rutlands clone of this chuck, and also Record distribute a clone, see e.g. Stiles & Bates. I don't know if they are the same as the Vicmarc but they certainly look strikingly similar.

If you'll be thinking of upgrading your lathe in the future, it would be prudent to get one of the many chucks on the market that features a removable insert which is threaded for your current spindle; that way, within limits, you'll be able to replace the insert and fit the chuck to a bigger lathe for a fraction of the cost of replacing the chuck.

Cheers

Neil

You can also have aSupernovva 2
I have had the first Supernova and have been very happy it but from what I have read, I dont think you can go far wrong with any of the good names :)

I just had a quick look and saw the Supernova here for a very good price

Peter Helmsley at The Toolpost is a good guy and does some useful stuff, but you need to be aware that the prices are all quoted excluding vat (it says so if you look carefully), so not so sure that price is that good after all !!!

Cheers, Paul. :D

Have a look on Ebay as I found some prices to match Toolpost :)

I will try to find it again if you want and it was for the Supernova 2

Slightly OT, but does anyone have a chart of which makes of chuck/jaws that are interchangeable? I have a Bonham and a Supernova 2 which unfortunately aren't, but it would be useful to know which are.

The supernova is the chuck I would go for . Its easy to change the fitting if you want to change the lathe in the future. This means you can buy anything that fits the supernova" knowing that it will always fit and not need replacing if you buy a different lathe. This is also true of the Vicmarc VM100 and VM200 chucks but they a re a little more expensive.

Do not pay more than £129.00 inc vat for a Supernova2 chuck

im glad you shown me the rutlands ,dakota one ,its got geared mechanism and i think it may be the one for me,with the cash i save i can get the six pack of dakota(best on test)chisels at £69 problem solved it too takes all the well known jaws, its identical to the record 4000 chuck

Be wary of the Dakotas/FX4000 chinese copy chucks 3 that I have tried have been out of true due to poorly cut registers on the thread. Its basically a copy of the RP4000/ vicmarc chuck and early models came with photocopied "vicmarc instructions" Im sure there are some accuarte ones now but the first batches were plagued with being out of true

thanks Russel, thats a kick up the pants, top of my short list for my new record lathe, the jaws are interchangeable too with the record chuck!! better to be pee warned than to be peed off,

joekid Craft supplies are just introducing the same chuck they have had to have special washers made to correct the fault on the first batch. At least they have done something about it the others seem to fob you off.
