What should a chain on a planer thicknesser be lubed with? or not at all?
I would tend to think that any sticky lube will just attract dust and turn into a sticky mess

Hi, The best I have found that is also recommended by manufacturers is 'white lithium grease'. You can buy it in B+Q in a can, found near wd40. Wood dust and chips do not stick to it.

Cheers

I don't know about p/t chains - but if they are a sprocket chain such as is used on bikes, there are some excellent spray lubes for bike chains available now. Specifically designed to penetrate inside the joints but leave a dry surface which does not attract grit etc. Just look in your nearest bike shop. I've found them useful on hand drills and other tools as well.

Bikeshops tend to like a spray lube called GT85 these days. It's terrific stuff and also works as a polish for bike frames - and it smells of new car! Definitely don't use WD40, as it isn't really a lube. Also: keeping a chain clean is as or more important than keeping it lubed, at least if the dirt getting in there is abrasive. Bike chains should be removed and soaked in citrus degreaser every so often - but they have hard lives exposed to the weather, grit, etc.

If you prefer lithium grease (it usually lasts longer) you can get in spray form as well as solid - e.g search for SG85.
