I'm wondering if this is backing plane? It's quite narrow. In the USA, backing planes were used by shipwrights to hollow out the back of boards to lighten the final weight of the boat or ship. Those I've seen here were mostly jack plane length but I have seen one that was a longish smoother length.

Or just a peculiar scrub plane that looks really nice. I opt for scrub plane.

As for the tote being at the front of the plane, that's because over in Europe, many traditional woodworkers did things backwards.

(running for cover before the tomatoes fly)

I have my Battle-Bowler in place so it's okay.

I do things Bassaxwards at times too..

Wolfgang,

It seems you are quite right....

I have been looking at the screw that holds the cap iron. I has some kind of graphic on it, but I couldn't make anything out of it. Then I saw this picture
on the page "Kleines Werkzeugmuseum" That's what is on the screw.

This evening I'll see if there is a number on the cap iron.

Thank you so far

Cheers,

Marcel

@ Wolfgang,

There was no number on the cap iron.

I made a mistake  ; the stamped cap iron screw with the Steiner logo is on another plane I have. This one ( from your museum). There is no number stamped on that one either.---
