Hi All
1st question
So I have bought a Union Gradute lathe and this came with it
FullSizeRender.jpg
IMG_1266.JPG
it is branded Coronet and is 2 MT with a 3MT adaptor fitted, the main part is revolving i.e. as in a revolving centre and the other cone shapes fit into it to reduce the size, I was at first thinking Jam chuck but why would it be revolving?
2nd question
Also on the Graduate is this bracket contraption

what is its purpose?

Many thanks for your help in advance.

Best wishes

Phil

The centre is a tail centre and the bolt on bit looks to be some sort of indexing device. Have you a faceplate with holes drilled in it?

What's a tail centre used for? also I could not understand why the 3mt adaptor as the drive centre on the grad is 3mt but the tail is 2mt?

Yes did think it might be indexing but could not understand the positioning, but just had a thought ! this is the bowl end and I guess the indexed piece could be on the bed end.......

The goblet thingy with the Morse taper is what is usually called a cone chuck. Grips on the outside of work between spindles, rather than having a centre point about which to rotate. So you can put square stock straight into the chuck without locating a centre. But as you say, not clear why it has a 3MT adaptor if the Grad's tailstock is 2MT. Unless there is some way of locking the cup part to the taper so it can be used as a drive centre in the 3MT headstock too.

It's always possible that the previous owner acquired the centre hoping to use it on the tail but afterwards found it was the wrong taper. He then kept hold of it, as it was too good to throw away and might come in useful. Haven't we all got things like that?
