Hi

The first type mounted within the bench surface is used extensively allowing a strong mounting, integration into the workbench top while maintaining a flat bench top surface.

Of this type and as a first woodworking vice, I would buy an old Record 52E with a quick release. They were used in schools, very well built and go on for ever. I have one from the 1960s which is going strong. The Axminster version is smaller, without a quick release and is generally thought to be less good.

Good clean Record 52Es are commonly available on e-bay (there are several ending today and can be had for under twenty plus postage. In the past members have had spares which they are willing to sell.

Regards
Richard

Looks like a copy of the Record V149 Scewfix used to sell for about £12. Did me ok until I got something bigger.
