Hi guys,

I am making a bookcase for a customer. I know how to joint edges with the domino (500) but how do i joint an edge (ie the end of the shelf) to a face (side of the bookcase) is there something i can reference from, i tried experimenting, and got them lined up neatly in a row but not on the line i wanted. Nothing on the internet i can find, do i have to make a jig?
any thanks

Forgot to say, there is a way using a straight edge. I'm logged on using a phone, but can post a pic tomorrow of the point on the Domino that you need to line up with your line where you want the mortices to be cut.

Cheers
Stu

The distance from the base plate to exactly the centre of the cutter is 10mm. So either scribe a line exactly 10mm below where you want the domino to be and align the base edge with it by eye or clamp a batten exactly 10mm below the same and use that to give additional reference for the base of the domino.

Here y' go

- Mark up the domino positions on the shelf.
- Lay the shelf flat on the side with the end aligned in the position you want the shelf to end up.
- With the jointer laid horizontal on the side piece domino into the end of the shelf.
- Turn the jointer to the vertcal an butt it up to the end of the shelf and joint vertically into the side.
- "Hinging" the shelf to the vertical should and fitting it with dominoes should locate it in the correct position.

This procedure can be used with the biscuit jointer as well. It's hand as it means you only have to mark up one piece.

I use a similar process in this video, using a biscuit jointer. It's about 9 minutes in. Don't bother with the rest, it's a bit boring! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkdQHroz8ls

I'm pretty sure Peter Parfitt demonstrates this in one of his videos. I can't look now cos I'm at work but it should be one of these: https://www.google.co.uk/?safe=active&s ... itt+domino

Is that the one with the domed roof that you can hear all the seagulls through. That was the case when we lived in Newquay over 50 years ago. Or has it been updated?

You've been given the correct method, just to add, make sure you've got extraction fitted. If not the cutter starts to clog and then "flutter" or "kick" on the workpiece, not much but enough to introduce slight irregularities that will stop you getting the ultra tight glue lines we all aim for. You can sometimes get away without extraction when the Domino is horizontal, but not when it's vertical.

Good luck!
