While I am making my competition piece the piece of log that I had chopped off had enough wood left on it to make something else, So I made this turned box I don't know the wood but the finish is danish oil and then a quick buff on the chestnut system. I put the lines on to hide the join and then did the lid with a texturing tool, stained and then wiped in some gold wax.

I do like 'hidden' features. :)

Very nice form. Cannot hazard a guess at the timber.

Beautiful work as usual.
Elegant form, nicely detailed and a nicely asymmetric alignment of of the figuring.

Nice detailing Derek, pretty box. I have to get one of those detail tools sometime, I really like the effects they can produce.

Neat little box, very well executed match of the grain lines across the join.

The decorative ring on the top being just enough to enhance without overwhelming.

Thank you CHJ. With this piece I made the box and just felt that a little to the lid was all that was needed.

It is so easy especially for a beginner to get carried away with decorating tools and the like and overdo the decoration.

That's beautiful! I am very new to this (in fact I am here looking for advice on how to actually get started in woodworking), so forgive me if my question seems basic or silly but does the weather / temperature affect the opening and closing as the wood expands / contracts?

The lid is a loose fit but not that loose that it flops around I still have this piece and the lid is a good a fit to this day. Also turning it from one piece of wood and as you can see the grain matches so any movement is about the same for bottom and top.

And no question is a silly one if you don't know just ask, we all had to start somewhere
