Does anyone know a source for either of these in the UK.

Seems its easy enough to locate in America but I don't really want to pay importation fees to get it.

Ideally i'd like like the flakes but premixed would be okay otherwise.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

(edit, seems I can find black premade french polish here)

I've never seen Platina in flake form here. I import mine from Shellac.net. Smith and Rodgers do a pre mixed 'transparent polish' that might be similar - although I've never ordered it so I'm not sure how similar it is to Platina.

Smith and rodger also do a black polish premixed.

On a small test piece a few weeks back, I mixed some black die with button polish and that worked really well. I died the wood black under that as well, although I believe for the blackest black, you should mix blue into black.

melt-down a '78' rpm record, its made from black shellac and very cheap.

^Interesting I might try it if I can find some.

I'll probably give transparent or pale polish a go before I look at importing anything.

There is White Polish. It comes ready mixed and is sold by Rustins and others. It's the stuff that has a slightly milky appearance. I haven't used it in over 25 years but IIRC it doesn't impart much colour. It's very difficult to source in it's dry state. It comes as a white powder known as Bone shellac but even the powder has a very limited shelf life - which is probably why it is rarely sold other than being ready mixed.
