They say assumption is the mother of all screw ups.

Can you spot what I didn't ?

Anyone know an easy way to tell if something is brass, gunmetal or bronze ?

Thanks,
Carl

Is there a crack in the cap iron?

(and is the next question: can it be brazed?)

It's actually by 'Sorby' and not 'Sorry' as advertised?

Is the screw long enough?

At least gunmetal is a specific recipe and a set colour (that changes over time :? ) but 'brass' and 'bronze' cover a huge variety of recipes. Brass is generally yellower than bronze though, bronze is darker.

Screw is fine, quick sharpen and I'm good to go.

Nope this nice lady could read and she clearly stated I.Sorby. Sadly lacking my portrait though :(

Will put you out of your suspense this evening, it made my jaw drop when I opened the box.

Its not a thumb plane but bigger, going by the board spacing on the table.

Pete

It was described at having a 5" sole and the seller didn't mention the word "thumb"

The problem is in the first picture and is not crack or size related.

Is it actually iron / steel, not brass bronze or gunmetal, apart from the lever cap?

Is the answer to your easy testing method "a magnet won't stick to it"?

Sadly the magnet only tells me it's non-ferrous brassy type. Works a treat on the modern copper coins in my pocket but guess the date stamp is just as easy to use.

Pete,

Front infill definitely missing but think that is by design not age. The Norris 31 Thumb plane (also 5") started off without the front infill but later they added one.

Was going to put you all out of your misery but my camera battery is flat.

Wow, that's rather lovely in its own unique way.

I certainly would not have guessed without being told there was something odd, from your pictures or the eBay vendor's.

Do you think it's just a thrifty replacement for one that got lost?

AndyT,

It must be must be, mustn't it ?

Google provides me with lots of pictures of thumb planes and all have brass bridges/lever caps. Although as you have pointed out the internet isn't the best place for searching for antique tools. Maybe only the cream get photographed.

RichardT,

Good enough for the statue of liberty, good enough for me and my wooden lever cap (lol had to google that).

I think it's gorgeous...I had a watch on that one and both me and Toby thought it was a thumb plane at first just because of the design but I read the description after a while and realised it was quite big.

You have a sole that is a gem and an iron to suit so you have many many options.

1) Leave it as it is...it's perfectly functional and one has to ask would it have been perhaps a raw casting that was common back then, bought by a carpenter who didn't work metal and instead of making a brass lever cap he made a wood one. if so...I'd be tempted to leave it for historical reasons alone.

2) You can buy or make your own brass/bronze/gunmetal lever cap...

3) You can go the whole hog and add an infill at the front too....

I think you got a nice plane there...I am certain the seller would not have known any difference because to be honest...do we?

Jimi.

Option 1 sounds good to me, if it aint broke don't fix it.

Have enough projects on the go and on the list without adding more.

Having said that it is broken and it does have one big crack at the top and one in the side which appears when under tension (can be seen in the bottom picture of page 1) So never say never but fingers crossed all is well for now.

Haven't / won't be complaining to the seller as it was my assumption that was up the spout, not her description.

Isn't "thumb plane" just a style without a size requirement ?

Norris did a 5" thumb and so did Spiers
