Woke up in the middle of the night to hear water running, a screeching sound and the boiler going full blast. Went into the bathroom and hot water was spurting from the tap even though it was turned off. Tried turning the tap on and off again but had no effect so ended up turning the boiler and main stopcock off.
Called the plumber in the morning and he said the ceramic disc tap was broken so fitted an isolator valve on the supply and turned the water back on. The boiler fired straight away and we could hear water running. Plumber said ‘you’ve got a leak under the floor!’ (hammer)
We’ve got emergency insurance cover so they sent out an engineer who crawled under the floor until he’d found the leak under the basin. A soldered tee joint had come apart because there was only a couple of millimetres of pipe in the joint and the ceramic disc tap breaking had created enough vibration to break the bit of solder holding the joint together. The bathroom floor had to come up to do the repair.
I’ve now replaced the ceramic disc taps with conventional washered taps! Just grateful we’d taken out emergency plumbing insurance for the first time.
Regards Keith
