Best to do it by post count - page count just depends on post-per-page.

Quite a few forums have "dustbin" threads; in effect multiple threads get started and finished under the same title. The length of these really depends purely on the age of the forum.

I've never seen a thread actually discussing a single topic longer than around 1000 posts.

We have a "Welcome to the forum thread" and a "What did you do in / to your Discovery this week" thread and both of those get posted in constantly. I find it interesting to look at people's post count. Although I worry when I see my own on our Land rover Discovery 3&4 owners club forum! pps:
