Well today's fun and games took part in Abertillery, the land of my fathers and mothers actually. It's a small ex-mining town north of Pontypool. I don't get up there much these days, well not since grandmother died in 2015. So today was actually quite a nice little treat.

One of the biggest treats is being able to go see the Guardian, due to having to wait for control to decide exactly they wanted me to do.
So with half and hour to kill I went to see the Guardian again.
The Guardian is a sculpture, erected in 2010 as a tribute to 45 men who died in a mining accident at Six Bells Colliery in 1960. He is absolutely magnificent.

He stands 20 metres tall atop a stone plinth. Made of steel layers that have been allowed to rust, which gives him a natural almost sympathetic look.
More info here for anyone who's interested:-

If you ever have cause to visit anywhere near Abertillery go see him, you won't be disappointed.

You're lucky. We have an 8' statue of a miner in the centre of town (a real miner of course, a hard rock miner - not one of those wussy coal miners :D ). Unfortunately he has his arms outstretched as if he were about to take off, a rictus and his pelvis thrust forward as if if someone were jamming a cucumber up his jacksie. :D

Redruth. In the early 1800s where I live was the most expensive real estate in the world.

Cornish miners look like morris dancers? I didn't know that!
