I bought planer/thicknesser sometime ago but haven't used it much, today I was thicknessing some posts for planters and was surprised the timber didn't seem to be getting any smoother, then I realised was putting the timber through upside down!

Well I went to a bandsaw this week, the guys couldn't understand why the wood was burning and cutting was slow and hard work.
The blade was inside out so the teeth were pointing upwards...

I've done the same drilling through one of the steel-box lintels we seem to have over our windows; the drill got stuck in one of the holes so I put it in reverse to get it out, then promptly forgot I'd done this and started drilling the next hole... the masonry bit went through the first centimetre of plaster regardless, then the HSS bit just span and polished and heated up the steel a load before I realised what I'd done!

I has done the drill thing but not to the point of smoke. In fact its a regular thing, the reverse button gets knocked when placing it down and when I come to drill its removed no material.

I am also stupid because I don't understand how you could put timber through a planer/thicknesser upside down. Doesn't it plane the top of the wood?

He would be thicknessing the timber but had the already surface planed side up, so while plaining one side still it would appear no side had been touched as it came out the thicknesser looking as it did when it went in.
