Stupid question

I've made a box in mahogany, gave it two coats of shellac sanding sealer, I then applied a coat of Briwax clear polish with a green scouring pad.

My questions are,

1 should I use a smooth rag to apply the polish? and
2 do you actually rub the polish into the wood or just give it a covering?

I don't think that is a stupid (2) question(s) at all - and I'd like to see the answer to both

Wouldn't the two coats of ss prevent most/any absorption of the wax into the wood?
