I've struggled with back problems on and off for a few years mostly due to doing tree surgery work. Funnily enough I'm trying to get in to woodworking as something that would hopefully be a bit easier on my back...
I've found that yoga and Pilates have both helped immensely in keeping me mobile, I did classes for a while but once you have the basics then 10 or 15 minutes a day at home is enough to make a difference, for me anyway. Good luck, it can get quite depressing when you have long term back pain, but there can be light at the end of the tunnel.

Turning things

Finally, build a few canoes.

This could be goodbye to the building industry after 30+ years...
