A client recently asked me to copy the finish on a piece of furniture which was in a furniture shop, I am accquainted with the owner so asked him if he would ask his maker for the formula. The reply was Morells dark oak and the French polisher mixes stipple afterwards. The piece has been antiqued and the colour is a goldeny dark oaky colour(best I can come up with) and the wood is Oak
My question is,what the hell is stipple.
Or is it literally just stippling
 
I thought that stipple was a sort of brush! Are you sure he didn't say (or mean) scumble? Scumble is a traditional form of (varnish) glaze used as a medium to hold oil-based colours. Best sources were Ratcliffe's of Lineaker Street in Southport or Bollom & Keeps.
