It should be a stop for repeatable cuts, however I don't believe it belongs with the mitre gauge, and is probably a home made thingy. The mitre gauge is not I don't believe of Startrite Manufacture, but will if it fits the track work just as well.

This is where i bought it from it arrived today

It may not be manufactured by Startrite themselves, but that's what they've supplied as part of their bandsaws in the past.
It's identical to the one supplied with my 301, although mine was painted black and this one appears to have been cleaned and polished up.

The bar I think should have a right angle on it, rather than the curious angle shown. I doubt that is original Startrite supply.

Can't see it being a repeat stop because of the sloping angle of the rod, the pressure from holding your work against a round sloping piece of metal would force it to slide up the slope plus if you were to push a little too far when cutting short pieces your blade would come into contact with the metal rod. It isn't long enough for any meaningful work.
There are two screw holes in the fence so that a wooden extended fence can be screwed to which stops can be clamped.
Personally I would get shot of it and fit a longer more stable wood fence.

It is the same as supplied with my startrite bandsaw from new some years ago.

I've never used the rod with mine, but it is supposed to be a 90 degree bend at the end (is it just the angle of the photo that makes it look an odd angle ?) and used as a stop for repeat cuts as mentioned above.

If the bend in the stop bar isn't currently at 90 degrees then easily adjusted with a vice and tapometer !

Never used mine though in the last decade or so !

Cheers, Paul

It would work well at other angles than 90deg though.
Maybe a home made end stop for a specific angled cut ?
