Over the last few years I've read the odd article here and there about the mechanical benefits of hot pressing wood (not for bending purposes, but under extreme pressure to compress the wood). Inevitably the articles are about how the latest method might be better than the last etc. however, I have yet to find any of the blasted stuff for sale!
I'm mainly interested in buying some heavy, but local (to the UK) wood and compressed local wood seems the way to do it, not least because of the claims that it can increase density by 3 times - imagine a nice piece of oak/beech/etc. with now twice the weight/m^3 than lignum vitae and readily available. T'would be a wonderful thing.
(for those asking 'why?' - my interests lie in turning wood, and making tools with it!)
