I've got a shelf to put up and will be using Spur shelving, or rather wickes version of it. Is there any kind of reccomendation for the spacing of the uprights? I'll be using a 60" x 15" beech shelf 28mm thick. I'm thinking four uprights, does that sound about right? I'm not expecting anything too heavy to go on it but will be using at least 2" x 10 screws as that's what I've used in the past and not had anything come adrift.

I've just found some spur shelving info and the recommended screw size is a 12 gauge. I'll have to order some more screws ...

Obviously it depends on what your walls are made of and how thick the plaster is, but I find that in our house (brick or stone walls with soft Victorian plaster) I need 3" screws for that sort of job.

Hmm. You'll need some substantial fixings as that beech shelf will weigh rather a lot before you put anything on it

The shelf started out as a table top that I cut lengthways.
I put the other half up in a cupboard using battens and 6.5 x 60mm hex head screws!
I doubt screws that size will go through the spur uprights though.

I would use 3" screws.

With a 2" you will have 1/2" in the rail doing nothing 1/2" in the plaster doing nothing and just 1" in the plug holding everything up.

Thanks. I'll check on some of the plugs I've got and see how long they are before I buy any screws. Luckily the walls seem pretty solid.

Just tap them to the back of the holes with the screw.

From experience at work with different wall types the screw needs to go through the back of the plug for optimum fixing.
I've just bought some 8 x 50 Fischer plugs for the job. They say to drill a 60mm deep hole and use 55mm plus the fixing depth screws (to allow it to go through the back of the plug) so I've ordered some 6 x 70 screws. Should be more than adequate for the job.
