Does anyone know of any tutorials on using spirit stains for turned items. I have a load of very plain beech and sycamore and you can only do so much using shape to enhance it. I have been experimenting with piercing and thought I would like to have a go at staining but havn't a clue where to start.

I would like some help with this one as well..
I can give one big Hint..always put the lid or can top on
dyes and stains & move it away from the lathe working area..
I now have teak oil all over my floor...lol

If you are using Chestnut stains I use meths, I'm pretty sure they are meths based.

Alex, I've been playing with these stains recently and find that application is best done with the lathe off. They are meths based so thats what I use to thin them but they do dissolve in celulose thinners too. each colour will re-dissolve the last a bit, so blending is a doddle and with the lathe off you avoid different colours being in straight horizontal bars(like they are in the online guide linked above).
The last time I used them I applied them with an air brush, this seems to give nice results :D
