Having recently acquired a spinning wheel made by my father-in-law I thought I would share some pictures of it. He made it some years ago on his trusty ML8 (which he passed on to me when his hands got too shaky). A real exercise in copy turning! Not sure I would have the patience.
He also made harps, which my wife is re-learning to play but they are not round!

I think we sometimes forget that woodturning is/was another method of 'machining' parts to create other tools to produce items essential to living and not just a tool for hobbyists to make ornaments :)

Why is it we cannot make machines so beautiful any more. Now it just function over design.
That is something to treasure and you should be very proud of your father.

We can - the question is 'why are people so reluctant to pay the going rate for quality anymore?'

I would expect to charge in the region of £700 plus materials to make that wheel.

Regards Mick

Indeed, but there are others, such as myself, who have a lathe but as part the general workshop equipment. I use mine very often but not for turning bowls and other ornaments.

I use it as and when needed for turned parts in furniture and other cabinet making. I can also convert it to turn small items in metal, usually brass, for fixings and accessories.

Nope, Nowadays it is marketing over design. Functionality is way down the list of priorities.

The really good thing about that wheel is that (according to the spinner in the house) it's not just beautifully made, but technically a particularly sophisticated machine. So it's pleasing both for form and function.

(tho' to be a bit Victor Meldrew, I actually find all those bobbins a bit OTT)

Very nice piece not just the turning but the design as well. Somewhere in my files I have a paper set of plans for a spinning wheel that one day I may attempt at making

If you're making it for a spinner, ask them first - there are many designs, and preferences vary. Putting time and effort into a particular design purely because you happen to have a plan for it might be ... annoying.

Here's a thread from a little while ago with some helpful info:
