Could it all be ground down from square stock, with no hot work at all?

AndyT - looks like that to me, too. Like a turning tool (albeit in different steel).

Sort of a strange looking animal, but so too are some of the gigantic german offerings from MHG and 2 cherries.

(the narex chisels look similarly ground only, just from round stock, but their price reflects that).

I have seen these up close, the square section blade looks to be pressed into a separate round bolster, leaving small gaps at the centre of each face, a bit like the Veritas PMV 11 chisels. All the elements are tremendously beefy but the construction does not inspire confidence. There are better mortice chisels available for less money imho (for starters their sash mortice chisels are great and more than up to the task of furniture scale mortices).

I have some narex mortice chisels and for the money they are fine but I much prefer my old Marples and Sorby sash mortice chisels. They just feel much better in the hand and they have nice boxwood handles.

Matt
