Hi all,

I live in a 1910s building which has some beautiful old casement windows in varying states of disrepair. I've posted about these previously.

Is there anyone on this board that lives around South East London that might be able to come and repair some of these (paid work, not asking for free)

I can probably handle the simple bits of filling here and there but a lot of them need more extensive work.

I'm not that keen on the restoration companies around London - I'm really keen on repairing and restoring where possible and I don't get a good feeling that they really care that much about this sort of thing, they just want to plough through it as quickly as possible.

Recently I had a great chat with Mike.S and he suggested someone here might be able to help.

That's an interesting cat flap you have there! I've seen and fixed far worse windows than that (but I don't live locally to offer to do it), but have you checked the frames to make sure they are solid? Often it seems fine because the paint looks intact when it's actually soft / rotten underneath; the best way to check is with an awl or knitting needle on the faces, don't do the tops of the sills as thats where standing water will pool and enter any holes you make.

Also make sure whomever does give you quotes can show proof of their puttying skills - there are some real bodgers out there who could do the woodwork but make the puttying look like a 5yr old has applied it, ruining the overall finished look.

Hmm on reflection - where abouts in SE london are you - I do have family living in Epsom I could maybe stay with if there are no better offers.

here's a link to pics of my last window renovation job - note the puttying!

(the paint on them is 2 coats of oil based undercoat, hence the slightly sloppy application, linseed oil putty needs at least 1 month to cure before any oil based paint is applied - and it's far quicker to scrape paint off glass than to apply masking tape, and it also seals glass to frame)
