The pressed steel legs on my belt sander take up too much floor space so I've decided to make a simple cabinet stand, probably on wheels, for it. Can anyone point me in the direction of some simple plans for such a thing. It only needs to be softwood and ply glued and screwed together. No need for any fancy joints as it will be painted battleship grey when its done.

Ty OWWM and (I think) Keith Bohn or Robert Vaughn; one of them has made a series of MDF painted bases, that are dead ringers for cast iron in both appearance and weight. They would be more than man enough to take a sander's weight.

Quick edit: Look at this for example, picture No.3: http://vintagemachinery.org/photoindex/ ... px?id=2198

EDIT TWO: Step-by-step guide: http://www.owwm.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=158734 looks smashing when finished.

EDIT THREE!! This is the original one: http://owwm.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=33625

You don't need a plan from anywhere. Get you pencil out and draw it on a piece of paper. You know the dimensions. Just think of it as a butchers table clad in ply. Use 2 x 2 that will be strong enough.

This is not a criticism, but people seem to underestimate their capabilities without trying.

I've done that with a few benches. All bolted together for strength and then clad in ply to prevent twisting. This job is much smaller though. I have had a quick sketch of a few ideas but not come up with anything I like so far, I'll keep going ...

Ok, I've had a quick squiggle and I'm off to Wickes to get some ply and 38 x 63 CLS. I've used the bigger 38 x 89 CLS for my other benches but this is only a tiddler so the small stuff should do. I got four 50mm lockable castors off the bay the other week so I can make a start straight away if I can find some battleship grey in the shed.

+1. Plans can be good for complex things like boats, if they are good plans! For stuff like this just design how you want it.
