I have a big freud in the table, but would ideally like something a bit lighter for general handheld use. It must be able to take 8mm router cutters and have a reasonable amount of power, because I want to use it on the Leigh jig.

Any suggestions?

I use the Bosch dual base GMF 1400 The fixed base works realy well with a Leigh Jig unfortunatly the are not the cheapest at 1400 watts plenty of power

Hi marcros, My Bosch POF 1400 Ace Router It has an 8mm collet and it does all I ask of it hand held, quite reasonably priced as well
Geoff.

I've recently bought a Draper Expert dual base router (45368) as I have the big Triton which is just too heavy for a lot of hand held work. Very pleased with it so far and it's very good value - lightweight, 1350W variable speed, 1/2" and 1/4" collets with both the plunge and fixed base. Don't be put off by the Draper name, it's much better than their usual stuff.
