The poor old apostrophe is doing overtime. The usual Fish and Chip's is just not in the same league.

Going by the second-hand lawnmower we had the misfortune to buy off them a few years ago... I wouldn't want to risk a good blade to find out!

I got a good grade in English when I did my o levels, years ago, but as the years have gone by I've completely lost control of my apostrophe. Every time I use one it is pure chance whether it is in the right place, or indeed whether I even need it. Spell checkers often butt in and tell me I need one, but it just doesn't look right.

There is a method to this spelling "madness".
If a noun ends with a consonant, then the plural form is formed with an 's.
If it ends with a vowel, then it's a plain ol' s.
